SHAGREEN

Shagreen or Galuchat in French is the leather made from the skin of the stingray, it is recognizable by its pearl shaped texture.

The skin was first introduced in the 17th century by the Japanese on Samurai swords and other accessories. It was later popularized as a material to inlay furniture in the 1930's by the Art Deco design masters such as  Emile-Jacques Ruhlmann, Jean Michel Frank, Andre Groult.

La Galuche uses air-dried stingray and processes the skins in the traditional way. The shagreen is whitened or hand dyed in house in a wide range color.
